About Pickerel Lake
Pickerel Lake enjoys close proximity to Petoskey while also serving as the beginning of the Famous Inland Waterway.
The Inland Waterway “begins” in the serene waters of Pickerel Lake, a small body of water that is large on style and substance. Despite measuring at just over 1000 acres itself, Pickerel Lake allows access to endless nautical travel, with the Great Lakes accessible directly from these waters. Pickerel Lake is a relatively shallow lake, but does reach depths of 60-70’ in its center. Pickerel Lake also lives functionally as an extension of Crooked Lake, connected by a channel commonly referred to as the “Black Hole”. Pickerel Lake is particularly convenient in its access to Petoskey, with downtown just 15-20 minutes from much of the lake.

Discover Pickerel Lake Homes For Sale
The listing inventory on Pickerel Lake is typically quite low, resulting directly from the modest lake size. Homes that do come available typically range $350,000-700,000. However, occasionally an exceptional listing will come available, and price points can climb as high as $800,000 to over $1,000,000. Many of the more desirable offerings on Pickerel Lake can be found in the Eagle Beach Association, located just off M-68. Trail’s End & Township Park are both also highly popular lake section along the southern shoreline. There is a wide range in home styles, from rustic summer cottages to clean, modern designs. There are a number of available vacant lots in the $150,000-350,000 range, making new builds a more affordable option on Pickerel Lake versus other Northern Michigan lake markets.
Pickerel Lake is not as heavily developed as many of its fellow Northern Michigan lakes. Large sections of the western shoreline are owned by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. A significant amount of the eastern water’s edge is operated as Camp Petosega, one of the area’s preferred lakeside camping destinations.
Most Pickerel Lake residents identify Petoskey as their hometown, with dining and shopping reasonably accessible. However, for those located on the northern shoreline, Alanson is just a 5-10 minute drive while Indian River can be reached in about 15 minutes. Pickerel Lake is home to a healthy blend of seasonal and year-round residents. The more affordable prices make this an attractive area to buy in and rent seasonally to capture a return on investment. The more accessible price point also keeps carry costs down such as taxes and mortgage payments, making Pickerel Lake real estate a strong contender for the value-savvy buyer.

As part of the Inland Waterway, Pickerel Lake affords an endless array of boating destinations. Residents can pull away from their dock and ride all day without exploring the same shoreline twice! Two full service marinas are a short ride away on Crooked Lake, ensuring your boat is ready for long days of fun on the lake. Pickerel Lake also boasts an impressive fishery, with numerous other wildlife species visiting throughout the year! Pickerel Lake is a true natural beauty, and the perfect destination for anyone longing for peace and quiet.
Buying on Pickerel Lake oftentimes requires an inside track on forthcoming listings or willing sellers not currently marketing their properties.
