A place unlike any other, Walloon Lake holds the distinction as Northern Michigan's premier lakefront destination.

Steeped in history and natural beauty, Walloon Lake is known to many as the premier inland lake of Northern Michigan. In the early 1900s, Ernest Hemmingway spent childhood summers at his family’s Walloon Lake cottage, which served as inspiration for many of his later works. Located between Petoskey & Boyne City, Walloon Lake is a “fingered” body of water, with each section of the lake boasting unique qualities. Overall, Walloon Lake provides over 4,200 acres of navigable water, and over 30 miles of shoreline. A large variety of dining and shopping opportunities are available within at 20-25 minute drive from any part of the lake. Travelling to and from Walloon Lake is also made easy due to the lake’s close proximity to US131. Visitors from downstate or further south can access I-75 within 35 minutes, while multiple regional airports (Pellston, Traverse City) are both within an hour’s drive.

The Walloon Lake real estate market has proven exceptionally strong in recent years. Inventory has shrunk considerably of late, and sales prices have climbed significantly. Listing prices start at roughly $1,000,000 for more modest waterfront houses, while some vacant land can be had for less. Asking prices climb to $3-4million or more for truly elite Walloon Lake properties. There are a few signature architectural styles that adorn Walloon Lake's shores. Craftsman-style homes with broad waterside porches are very popular around the lake, as are restored classic log cabins. With available inventory so low, new builds have been very common on Walloon Lake of late, though these projects typically try to capture the traditional essence of Walloon Lake homes.

There's a common saying around Walloon Lake that "everybody is on the best part of the lake". The great thing about Walloon Lake is, depending on your interests, you are probably right to think you are in the premier location! Residents on the West Arm cherish the minimal boat traffic and striking waters that are a distinct blue-green tint. Owners in the North Arm love their close proximity to Petoskey (10-15 minute drive), while many also appreciate the nearby access to Walloon Lake Country Club, the lake's premier private social hub. Residents along the southern shoreline rave about the hard-packed sandy shoreline and calm waters. The key to buying correctly on Walloon Lake is to know your priorities, and then target the part of the lake best suited for your lifestyle.

Walloon Lake is home to a healthy and diverse fishery. Bass, trout, walleye, pike, and many other fish roam these waters. Learning the topography of the lake can be tricky, as Walloon Lake's bottom is "shelved" in many locations, featuring steep drops of 10-20 feet or more. Learning these subtleties is key to angling success! The shoreline is beautiful and has maintained much of its natural integrity over the years. The Walloon Lake Association (www.walloon.org) is a very prominent and active participant in maintaining the lake's natural beauty, and oversees a number of land conservancies around Walloon Lake.
